Prehabilitation: How Physical Therapy Prepares You for a Faster Recovery

What is Prehabilitation?

Prehabilitation, often called “prehab,” is a proactive approach to surgery preparation that involves physical and mental conditioning before undergoing a surgical procedure. The goal is to enhance your body’s ability to recover more quickly and effectively after surgery.

The healthier and stronger you go into your surgery, the fewer complications, the faster you will recover,  and the better your outcome.

Some surgeries need endurance and cardio vascular conditioning.  Others need strengthening of specific muscle groups.  Our therapists at Be Active Be Well, can create personalized programs for you to meet your specific needs.

Why Prehabilitation Matters

The idea behind prehabilitation is simple: the stronger and healthier you are before surgery, the better your body can handle the stress of the operation. This can lead to:

Faster Recovery:

A body that is physically fit is more resilient, leading to shorter recovery times and quicker returns to normal activities.

Reduced Complications:

Strengthening your muscles, improving your cardiovascular health, and boosting your overall fitness can reduce the likelihood of post-surgical complications.

Better Mental Health:

Surgery can be stressful, and prehabilitation often includes mental health components like stress management and mindfulness, helping you approach your surgery with a more positive mindset.

Components of a Prehabilitation Program

Physical Exercise:

Tailored workouts focusing on cardiovascular fitness, strength training, and flexibility.  Our skilled therapist at Be Active Be Well are here to offer expert guidance and support.

Nutritional Support:

A balanced diet to support your body’s needs before surgery.

Mental Preparation:

Techniques like mindfulness, meditation, or counseling to help manage pre-surgery anxiety.  Check out our post, Inhale, Exhale, Begin: Starting A Breathing Practice, for ideas about how to start a mindfulness practice.

Who Can Benefit from Prehabilitation?

  • Prehabilitation is beneficial for anyone facing surgery, but it is particularly helpful for those undergoing major surgeries like joint replacements, cancer surgeries, or heart procedures.
  • It’s also valuable for individuals with chronic conditions like diabetes or obesity, where improving overall health can significantly impact surgical outcomes.
